A HARD working couple who only take one day off work a year have retired after dedicating 22 years to their South Elmsall newsagents.

George and Carol Baker, who own G&C News on Doncaster Road, spent their last day in the shop on Friday and said they would miss it terribly.

Mrs Baker, 67, said: “I will be sorry to leave, it has taken over our lives for so long as we have worked seven days a week for 22 years. But I suppose you just have to let go.”

Mr Baker used to work for Yorkshire Traction but decided he wanted to run his own business so bought the shop.

The dedicated couple admitted to only taking Christmas day off for five consecutive years.

Mrs Baker said: “We didn’t have a holiday for so long so it will be nice to have some time to ourselves.”

They said the secret to their long-lived success was not to actually work together.

Mr Baker, also 67, said: “I walk in and she walks out. That’s just the way it works. We both can’t be the boss.”

But the pair did admit to ‘talking shop’ in the evenings while watching television.

Mr Baker, who got up at 4.30am every day, said despite the long hours and constant thoughts of the shop, it was the most rewarding job he had ever had and would miss it tremendously.

He said: “We have met some characters over the years and customers are friends to us. They really are smashing.

“A sense of humour has been the most important thing over the years, we have banter with everyone and that’s what has made this job so enjoyable.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone for their support. We hope to still see them around the town though.”
