STAFF at South Hiendley J&I School have won an award for having the best kitchen in the district.
Kingswood Catering, which supplies Wakefield’s school meals, handed out the award for the recent improvements carried out by staff, including getting rid of airline-style trays and allowing pupils to order their food from a choice of menu.
There are also plans to refurbish the kitchen during the summer holidays.
The award was presented to the school during an assembly earlier this month.
Headteacher Lisa Corson said: “We have made a lot of changes recently and have even more in the pipeline. We have a new system where the children can pick what they are eating from a choice of three dishes during registration. Previously, some pupils who were in the second sitting didn’t always have a choice and would have to eat what was left.
“We’ve also got rid of the airline-style trays and are now using plates. The children get up after their first course to collect the second, so if they are having a hot pudding it hasn’t gone cold by the time they are ready to eat it.
“The kitchen will be done out during the holidays, with Kingswood Catering paying for part of the cost.
“We were really pleased to receive the award as it recognises the work that has been put in to improve school dinners for our pupils.”
