THE safety of local children is in ‘danger’ due to the amount of potholes in a South Elmsall cul-de-sac.

Brian Newcombe, 71, of Hill Fold, said youngsters who played on the road and rode their bikes in the area were in danger of hurting themselves if they were to hit a pothole.

He said: “Children aren’t aware of the dangers like adults are and if they were to ride over a pothole on a bike and fall off, I wouldn’t like to think about the consequences.

He complained to Wakefield Council about the problem and said a council worker came out to inspect the holes.

Mr Newcombe said: “The man told me it didn’t meet the requirements for it to be filled.

“But one of them is eight inches wide. From a health and safety point of view it is terrible.”

He said: “I worry that if we get another bad winter they are going to become even worse.”

Graham West, highways manager for Wakefield Council, said: “We will review the most current inspection data and prioritise any necessary safety defect works.”
