A TRIO of talented chefs who provide healthy, delicious meals to more than 100 children every day have earned a top award.

The catering team at Carlton J&I School, South Elmsall, received an Eat Well award from NHS Wakefield District last week.

The awards recognise schools or businesses that offer healthy options to their customers.

Kitchen manager Linda Hepton said: “It can be difficult to get the children to eat healthily but we always provide a healthy meal and lots of choice, whether it be spaghetti bolognese, quiche, salmon nuggets or wraps.”

As well as providing healthy options, the Carlton Road school also encourages the children to cook healthily by inviting in guest chefs for cooking demonstrations. Packed lunches are also checked to make sure parents are provide healthy food.

Acting head teacher Maxine Smart said: “This award recognises just part of the great work our dinner ladies do and the healthy eating initiatives we promote in school as a whole. It’s a really busy job, catering to the taste of the pupils, and the food they provide is always of an excellent quality and delicious.”
