The only way is up for four charity shop workers who are raising funds as part of a national campaign.
Janette Chambers, Karen Prudhoe, Kay Morgan and Elisa Morritt - all managers at Cancer Research UK stores - will be scaling the 47 foot Ellis Bingham climbing wall at Xscape in Glass Houghton at 2pm on Friday, October 17.
Ms Chambers, from the Castleford store, organised the sponsored event as part of the charity’s Stand Up to Cancer campaign.
The 47-year-old said: “I’ve seen the climbing wall in Xscape loads of times and often looked up wondering what it would be like to climb it. So I thought it would be an ideal challenge for us to take on to support Stand Up To Cancer. We’ll be facing our fears and really going out of our comfort zones, but it will be worth it.
“We all hope local people will come down to Xscape to give us much needed support to get us to the top and help us raise funds for vital research.”
Miss Prudhoe, who manages the Dewsbury store and lives in Castleford, said: “I lost my dad to cancer five years ago and many of our staff, volunteers and customers have also lost friends and family to cancer, so we all know how devastating the disease can be. But the good news is that now, thanks to research, more men, women and children are surviving cancer than ever before. I’m excited, but definitely nervous, but every step I take I’ll be thinking of my dad and that will get me to the top.”
Stand Up to Cancer is a joint campaign between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. It will end with a live TV fund raising event at 7.30pm on October 17.
