A HEMSWORTH charity runner has been selected as an Olympic torchbearer.
Mick Cordall, of Union Street, will carry the flame through part of Ackworth on the morning of Monday, June 25, as it makes its way from Leeds to Sheffield, via Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract and Ackworth.
Mr Cordall, 43, was put forward for the honour by his wife, Louise. He has been running for 22 years and has raised thousands of pounds for various local charities and causes over the years.
He said: “It’s all thanks to Louise that I have been selected. I was delighted when she said she had applied for me. This is a chance of a lifetime for me, like winning the lottery. I am absolutely buzzing because I never thought something like this would be within my reach.”
The torchbearers were announced on Monday, along with the street-by-street route the Olympic Torch will take through the district.
The route will be as follows:
l Wakefield - Wentworth Street, Burton Street, Bond Street, Wood Street, Bull Ring, Westmoreland Street, Teall Street, Kirkgate Precinct and Kirkgate.
l Castleford - Leeds Road (Joffre Avenue to Front Street section), Front Street and Park Road.
l Pontefract - Front Street, Jubilee Way, Mill Hill Road and Ackworth Road (Kings School).
l Ackworth - Pontefract Road and Barnsley Road.
Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council, said: “This is a momentous occasion for residents to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay as it travels through Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract and Ackworth.
“I look forward to welcoming the inspirational torchbearers and encourage everyone to get involved by lining the streets, cheering on the torchbearers, and showing your support for the 2012 Olympic Games.”
