Voting will take place next week to elect a parish councillor for Fitzwilliam.

The Hemsworth Town Council by-election is taking place at polling stations from 7am until 10pm on Thursday, September 19.

The candidates are Colin Nicholson, standing for Labour, and Christine Hanks, who is standing without the backing of any party.

The by-election is taking place after independent councillor John Richardson resigned on July 7.

A second by-election could take place after Peter Hardacre, independent for the Kinsley ward, also quit last month.

Wakefield Council’s returning officer has been informed of the vacancy.

An election will take place if ten or more people write to the returning officer to request one. If not, current councillors can co-opt someone to sit on the council.
