TAXPAYERS' money has paid for a flag which town councillors hope to unfurl as the new emblem of Yorkshire.
South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council designed and commissioned
the flag to include the Yorkshire Rose and three coats of arms representing North, East and West Riding – the areas which made up Yorkshire before it was made into four divisions.
The town council, which raised its precept by almost four per cent last week, used council funds to pay for the flag.
But the it hopes to make the cash back by having more flags made and encouraging people to buy them.
The town council will have to gain planning permission to fly the flag, then register and promote the design so it becomes recognised across the county.
Laurie Harrison, town council leader, said: "It cost a few hundred pounds to make, with money borrowed from the council, but we are
hoping the idea will catch on and we can make more for people to buy.
"We have a flag pole at The Grove, on Stockingate, and are considering putting this flag up there.
"We want it to be recognised across Yorkshire. The flag has the three coats of arms from North, East and West Riding.
"We designed it in a Y shape with the Yorkshire rose in the middle. Red, white and blue were chosen as the colours because they represent Britain. I see this as the proper Yorkshire flag – I wouldn't walk behind the other one."

The current Yorkshire flag – a white rose on a blue background – was registered by the UK Flag Institute in July last year.
The Rev John Hall, chairman of the UK Flag Institute, said: "I see no reason why a county can't have two flags, as long as they are equally recognised. If people throw their weight behind it then it would have a fairly good case."
But Roger Sewell, vice chairman of the Yorkshire Ridings Society, said he thought there was little chance of registering the new design because a traditional flag had already been registered.
Keith Madeley, Yorkshire Society chairman, said: "We are delighted the white rose flag was registered and recognise that one, but that isn't to say we don't wish them well in what they're doing."
