HEMSWORTH will become the first venue outside
London to get a state-of-the-art 'sports zone' in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.
An outdoor multi-sports area, called an adiZone, is being built at
Hemsworth Arts and Community College.
The area will be fully equipped to cater for basketball and tennis with a climbing wall, outdoor gym and an open space area for dance, aerobics, gymnastics and martial arts.
Work started on the £150,000 project on Monday when Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's deputy leader and cabinet member with responsibility for sport, joined students at HACC for a turf cutting ceremony.
The public are also expected to be able to use the facility free of charge from Monday, July 27.
Coun Jeffery said: "The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are a great opportunity to inspire everyone to lead healthy and active lifestyles and it is fantastic that we can be part of it with this new outdoor
gym.
"This is a great example of how we work to give the community the best possible facilities."
