South Kirkby pit site date set - VIDEO

REGENERATION is expected to start on South Kirkby's old pit site in the spring.

Work will start in March on a 3m vocational training centre, which will promote learning and provide jobs.

A month later, work will also begin on the site, off Hemsworth Road, to build a waste management facility which will deal with more than 200,000

tonnes of the district's waste annually.

The new household waste recycling centre will have a green waste composting facility, a materials recovery facility, which sorts mixed recyclable materials, an autoclave plant to treat general household

waste, and an anaerobic digestion plant to produce sustainable electricity to run the plant.

The accompanying video, by project partner VT Environmental Engineering, shows the process that takes place in the autoclave reception hall, autoclave plant and anaerobic digestion plant in an animated format.

Work to build the waste management facility on the site is expected to last two years.

The project is part of a 25-year 700m Private Finance Initiative (PFI)also being partnered by Wakefield Council.

It plans to help the council reduce the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill and exceed future government targets for recycling.
