Early flood warning system set up
A NEW warning centre to forecast floods will be set up to protect homes and businesses that were devastated when heavy rain fell on Wakefield summer 2007.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said the 7.7m centre, which will be run by the Met Office and the Environment Agency, will improve predictions and responses.
Leeds City Council is among six local authorities to be given 15m to develop their plans in the event of another heavy downpour.
The announcement was made in the House of Commons today (WEDNESDAY) and follows Sir Michael Pitt's review of the 2007 summer floods which recommended a better warning system was needed.
