Diamond show to raise cash

Kellingley Social Club is the venue for a charity event to raise funds for the Castleford and District Cancer Self-Help Group.

Thursday, April 16, is the date for your diary and one of the stars of the show, Alvin Marper, was in touch by e-mail with news of the show, which is called Diamond Standards.

It seems that anyone who enjoys the music of the great Neil Diamond is most likely to book tickets for the night. The tickets are 3, or two for 5.

A band and various singers will entertain on the night and, having attended past Alvin Marper shows, I think we can confidently predict a well-produced evening's cabaret.

Many people will know Alvin from his work in the cabaret duo Rock Bottom.

If you have any charity events in our clubs, which you want everyone to know about it, why not get in touch and I'll do the rest?

Singer Dean Hubert is doing very well indeed with his new Billy Fury tribute show.

Dean is normally one half of the duo Two Steps Forward, with his lovely missus Jane forming the other half. Just recently Dean has been working on this nostalgia tribute act and it does seem to have started to pay handsome dividends.

I worked in a show with top duo Scandal last week and their act really is entertainment with a capital E.

Craig and Audrey, who make up the act, have something for everyone, as the regulars at Girnhill Lane Club in Featherstone will soon discover when they take the stage on Sunday evening.

South Elmsall act Easy Action were on fine form at the recent Leeds club union entertainment section showcase.

I went along to see the show and spotted that former Soulmates singer Mark is now fronting this long-established club attraction. All-round entertainer James Brandon caught my eye on the night, as did new singer James Warwick, who I would like to have a look at again.

Among the other acts which have impressed me lately on my travels are Pontefract singer Chris Wood, who I worked with only last weekend.

Chris is hoping to land a part in the West End production of Wicked in the near future and I'm sure that his friends and his lovely family all have their fingers crossed for him.

Local talent spotters can catch Chris in action in his own backyard when Willow Park Social Club will be the place to see him on Saturday, March 28.

I also had a look at newly re-formed club band Rockwood last weekend.

This five-piece outfit are an off-shoot of that great band of yesteryear, Nite Skool, and I caught their first set at Hemsworth Miners Social Club in Fitzwilliam last Sunday evening.

Rockwood should provide many a great club night for music fans of the 60s and 70s and I predict a very busy diary ahead for these guys.

Wakefield party band Night To Remember can always be relied upon to create the right atmosphere in clubs. Their holiday park set is also worth a look. They also dress to impress, if only the same could be said for many of today's newer club acts. Some seem to walk on stage looking like old tramps.

Singer Ali Jordan is another dress to impress expert who I worked with lately. When I first came into the business someone very wise took me to one side and advised me that the definition of proper stagewear is looking stylish and not in any way like anyone who might be sitting in the audience, stagewear should be distinctive.

If you know of any acts out there that you think deserves a mention here in the Express, just get in touch as I would really like to hear from you.
