Children mark end of their art exhibition
SOUTH Elmsall youngsters have helped mark the end of a exhibition of their work at a new art gallery.
The Carlton J&I School pupils created a display of multimedia work - including drawings, comic strips, ‘poetry pebbles’ and audio recordings of rock creature stories - for the Hepworth Wakefield.
They helped celebrate the end of the Out and About exhibition, the gallery’s first display of work by children, along with their families, friends and special guests.
They were joined by artist Clare Woods, whose exhibition The Unquiet Head inspired many of the children’s works. It was part of a project, funded by the Ernest Cook Trust with free transport provided by Arriva, that enabled children from local school to visit Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Brimham Rocks and Nostell Priory to take part in workshops.
Kathy Litton, headteacher, said: “Schools often struggle to gain the financial support required to offer visit and trips to art venues, which are often viewed as a luxury rather than an essential part of education.
“The Hepworth Wakefield’s Out and About project has provided a fantastic opportunity for our pupils and their families to enjoy a full programme of activities that we would have otherwise been unable to offer.”
