IT’s an unusual venue for a play – but an allotment site in Wakefield will be the backdrop to a story about the love between people and their giant vegetables.

A rag-bag bunch of gardeners have to pull together to save their beloved allotments in Losing the Plot, by the Mikron Theatre Company.

The show, written by Deborah McAndrew, sees strong personalties clash at Thistledale Allotments when tensions rise during the annual Heaviest and Longest contest.

But after a visit from the council they realise their vegetable plots are at risk, and battle to convince the people of the importance of allotments in society.

Marianne McNamara, Mikron’s artistic director, said: “Losing the Plot explores the history of allotments, and how they are thriving these days in a time when self-sufficiency is making a resurgence.”

It will be an open show at Park Lodge Lane Allotments at 7.30pm on Friday, May 18, so audience members are encouraged to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets and there will be a wet-weather shelter.

The stage lighting will be powered by custom-built bike pedalled through the show.

Tickets are not required but a collection will he held after the performance.
