Edward V11 Club in Allerton Bywater is surely the only club venue in this area which I have never visited in any capacity.
I don't know why, I've just missed making a visit over the years. I intend to take a look at the place on Wednesday, February 18, when a charity show will be staged on behalf of the coronary care unit at Pontefract General Infirmary.
Local entertain
er Johnny Vallon will be the compere for the night and this local personality (known to one and all as the Singing Ref) will be joined on stage by club stars Harry Turnstyle and Sonya.
Also on the bill will be a new singer who goes by the name of Gavin Johns. Tickets are £2.50 each or you can pay on the door.
Green Bowling Club in Ferry Fryston is just the right kind of venue for country music fans and February 25 is the next country show at this popular club.
Jack of Diamonds is the next star attraction and hopefully the event will be well attended.
Normanton girl Olivia Leigh makes the short journey to Pontefract this weekend, where she will appear at Willow Park Social Club on Saturday night.
The appearance of comedy vocal star Donna Elson at the same club on the following night makes up an outstanding weekend's entertainment at this lively and popular club.
Club stars JJ Benjamin, Aaron Ward and Sarah Pollin are just three of the forthcoming attractions at Ladybalk Social Club in Pontefract.
On the local band scene chart band One Mission will be the star attraction at Moorthorpe Empire when these guys take to the stage on Sunday night.
Another local Sunday band night takes place at Hemsworth Miners' Social Club, in Fitzwilliam, where top band Justified will be on stage.
Justified lead singer James Ashton performs a Michael Jackson tribute during the show, so no doubt we may see a busy dancefloor for this one.
Hemsworth entertainer Kevin Kane rang to let me know that he had just contributed to a radio phone-in on BBC Radio5 Live.
The subject of the phone-in was TV talent show guru Simon Cowell's recent disparaging and dismissive remarks about the talents of cabaret artists.
Kevin's hackles were apparently raised by the remarks and he was soon on air offering to take Simon Cowell around the clubs to show him some real talent.
My only observation on this would be that, rest assured, if the ever smug Mr Cowell could have found a way of making any money out of professional entertainers, as opposed to the easy to manipulate 'wannabes' on his TV shows, he would have been singing their praises long ago.
The second call came from Kinsley club-goer Melvyn Buckley, who was as ever bang on the money with his observations on a recent performance by family band Beardsmith.
Melvyn is of course quite right, Beardsmith are a terrific live attraction.
Finally for this week, local band Eton Rifles, who play mainly in South Yorkshire and the Midlands, have a rare local appearance in our area this weekend. The lads will be on stage on Friday night at the Robin Hood venue at Brierley Gap, near Hemsworth, and admission is free.
