Traveller site plan worries

IN the Express last week you ran an article: 'Traveller fears in planning bid' reporting on plans to turn land into plots for travelling showpeople.

As a local resident I am highly concerned about this and the effect it will have on the area.

Field Lane is at the top of South Elmsall hill where the road joins Doncaster Road (A638).

The site is greenbelt land near a site of special scientific interest and currently has horses grazing on it. It is visible from the main road and people driving past the village or into it will pass the site daily.

Yes, the plans include fences and trees, but how much will they hide and is this the view we want as visitors enter our village?

In the plans the plots will each hold caravans, cars, vans and numerous auxiliary vehicles.

How will they access this site along a road that has a 7.5 tonne weight restriction?

The current plans ask for eight plots but clearly state that more showmen require plots. Would this site be expanding?

The plans seem to imply this is a possibility. Our area is already struggling with local businesses closing. Will this development make our village a more attractive proposition for potential investors?

I understand the need for land to be made available in Wakefield for travelling showpeople, but surely there must be more suitable, discreet locations available?

A meeting has been arranged at the Social Centre on Westfield Lane tonight at 7pm for residents to share their views and Coun Wilf Benson will be attending.

If readers want to comment on these plans, contact Wakefield Council and make your voice heard through a letter or e-mail.
