Stop the me, me, me society

I have empathy with Mr Cordall and his family featured on the front of the Hemsworth and South Elmsall Express on February 26. In this day and age no disabled or vulnerable person should have to justify getting out and about – that's why we have disabled laws. There are groups in the community that can use these laws to benefit cases like Mr Cordall.

DiPPse (Disabled People's Partnership southeast) is a group that advertises its meetings at All Saints Resource Centre at South Kirkby in this paper via grassroots columnist Eric Burkes.

In my experience people only take up the fight when it affects them or their family and want everyone to share their battle. When their problem is solved they don't hang around to help, support or solve other residents' problem.

I am annoyed because I personally know Sandra Pickin, a town councillor and independent board member with Wakefield and District Housing, put a lot of work into Mr Cordall's situation, but she did not get a mention in the report.

She did much of the groundwork and she did not get paid – it was all voluntary.

It would be nice for volunteers and true community representatives to get some recognition for their hard work.

My mum and dad came to live with me so my family and I could look after them. They had mobility issues and, although it did take a while to get my house altered, it did happen, thanks to Wakefield Council. It doesn't always get it wrong.

There is a moral to this letter. Stop this me, me, me society before we have no community left.
