Save money use cinders
Before gas central heating took over from old-fashioned coal fires, especially in the mining areas, householders dealt with ice-covered roads and footpaths by spreading coal ash and cinders on them. Why doesn't the district council do the same?
From Upton we can see at least three coal-fired power stations – Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge.
They produce thousands of tons of surplus ash every day. Wakefield Council could probably buy it for next to nothing and stockpile around the district.
Such an area is on the Hemsworth-A1 link road, a lay-by which is part of the new roundabout near Upton. Years ago it was used to stockpile road grit, not for a roadside cafe or grub stop.
