Get a taste of reality

AFTER reading Coun Wormersley's letter (February 25 2010) headed 'Incensed by increase', I noticed that he voted with the majority of councillors to increase Wakefield Council's council tax bill by 2.4 per cent.

But he objects to Hemsworth Town Council's precept going up by 2.9 per cent, -1.1 per cent on last year.

Nobody wants increases in a fantasy world.

In reality let's look at the bigger picture.

If the Kirkby Road sports complex hadn't been sold off, we wouldn't have a new sports complex or new community hall.

But we have, and we're stuck with it.

If the former action group leaders hadn't gone down the road of contesting the council's actions and delaying the sell-off of the former sports complex, which was their decision, then we wouldn't have such a problem.

They finished up with a judicial review and costs of 2,850 and also more than 5,000 plus, which could have gone towards this year's town council precept.

The new sports complex and community centre would probably have been up and running and making money by now as well.

I have heard rumours that the junior football club of Hemsworth are being denied usage of the new sports complex on Sandygate Lane due to being far too good for them.

Nothing is too good for the youth of this country and to deny them the best is utterly preposterous.

Not everyone in Hemsworth thinks the new community centre is a monstrosity.

It has the look of the 50s and 60s art decor seen on the Antiques Roadshow.

I noticed recently that the centre had been fenced off, which was a shame as it looked quite good in open plan.

But in the era we live in destruction of it by a small minority appears to have been the motive.

Mr K Pickering,

St Helen's Drive, Hemsworth
