Funeral was so moving
I attended Luke's funeral at Wakefield Cathedral on Friday with my wife Irene the mayoress, representing the townsfolk of South Kirkby and Moorthorpe, as I did at Wootton Bassett.
Although I did not know Luke, having some family who reside in Upton I have only heard good things about him. To perform the role that he did in Afghanistan took a brave and courageous man with nerves of steel. He was a man who thought of his comrades and protected them.
I would also like to say a few words about his mates who travelled to Wootton Bassett. I, with the deputy mayor Coun Eric Tunstall, travelled on the coaches from Upton and I must say those mates of Luke's were a credit to him and the village of Upton.
I, Eric and the Mayor of Wootton Bassett, Coun Steve Bucknell, had a few words with some of Luke's friends prior to the cortege passing through Wootton Bassett. To see it on the television in no way prepares you for the actual event, the least you get is a lump in the throat.
