Comments out of context
In recent publications of the Express, some of the comments I made were taken out of context.
The comments referred to were made in a different place and in a different way to that in which they have been interpreted. The situations mentioned were part of a speech in defence of our workmen and their efforts to address the snow situation in the recent terrible weather conditions. These comments were made in a Wakefield full council meeting, immediately after the terrible disaster in Haiti.
Also at that point I made the council aware that on the morning of the meeting an additional earthquake had taken place in the next town to Port-au-Prince, causing even more death and destruction. I think that all three situations were an act of God.
In no way were my comments intended to minimize the situation that our people suffered in Wakefield's hardest hit area ofthe snow storm, namely, South Elmsall, Moorthorpe and South Kirkby.
With regards to my concern for all the people of our two towns, I was not sitting at home, I was out in the snow and ice with Adam Redfern, one of our younger councillors, trying to get the snow plough on to the streets to clear as many side roads in South Kirkby and Moorthorpe as could be reached. Our sister council in South Elmsall, I am told, also had the snow plough out. As far as I am aware these were the only areas in Wakefield Council where this service was operated by the local council.
At this point I would like to thank Mr Bywater and his family for their prompt response to our call for help.
Regarding the alleged 20,000 I receive – I am only paid the same amount as members of other parties who hold the same position. The money that I receive comes out of the same public purse which includes police pay and police pensions, and indeed, the pay of anyone who works for the local authority.
