Clean it up, councillor

I READ with some interest last week of the situation with street litter in the southeast, where I live.

I see Coun Clive Hudson had the time to have his photo taken with two street cleaners in Wakefield – so close to an election.

I was talking to a street cleaner in the southeast and asked him why I had not seen a large roadsweeper in my street for more than two years.

He informed me that he and the rest of the crew used to work Monday to Friday with two hours on Saturday morning and two on Sunday morning for the town centres, which was more than adequate.

Now everyone has been put on a four on, four off shift pattern with enhanced pay, which I am sure is a lot more than a few hours' overtime at the weekend.

He also informed me full a day's sweeping on Saturday and Sunday was not possible as there is no landfill site open to tip the large sweepers at. So workers were carrying out other duties to fill the time (what a waste of taxpayers' money).

It only takes one person to say we got it wrong. But who will it be? This is clearly a case of the council repairing something that's not broken in the first place.

Wake up Coun Hudson and put things back the way they were.

Our streets were a damn sight cleaner then than they are now. Change is not always better.
