Better planning needed
I WAS born and bred in Hemsworth and have lived here most of my life.
I have some great memories of walks into woods and fields and surrounding areas, until certain authorities decided to change the face of Hesmworth. Most of the historic buildings have gone forever. Five great woods plus hedgerows which in turn destroyed wildlife.
I was one of many who wrote to the Times wanting the Brickyard making into a Water Park and fishing pond plus a new clubhouse. It could have been a great cornerstone to revitalise Hemsworth, especially as it was underground fed by natural spring water.
I’d like to know what greater benefits it had putting it at the side of Hemsworth Park.
One other point I’d like to make is the traffic in Hemsworth is a joke. Has anyone assessed pollution levels especially around Grove Lea School? On certain days Grove Lea, Thomas Street and Victoria Street have become rat runs. Some cars come down Grove Lea at 40 to 50mph. Why can’t we have a 20mph or No Through Road signs before anyone gets seriously hurt? The point I’m trying to make is better planning and more open spaces before we grind to a halt.

Friday, February 3, 2012 at 01:00 PMI must agree with Mr Butterfield about the danger created by irresponsible speeding drivers, however, if the current speed limit of 30 mph is being ignored I do not think that lowering it to 20 mph will make any difference. More stringent penalties should be introduced to punish speeders, perhaps a short ban, increasing in length for subsequent offences; and for the over 70's, who are obviosly never going to learn, a lifetime ban.

Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11:35 PMIn reply to Mr Butterfields letter regarding "Better planning needed" surely it is far too late to critise planning now when we already have a water park, fishing pond and clubhouse in Hemsworth why would we want to go to the extra expense of relocating it to the other side of Hemsworth. The damage has already been done especially with the carbuncle known as Tesco's ruining the centre of out village and creating the "rat run's" you refer to not only for the residents local to Grove Lea school but also St Helen's & West End as all the short cuts to avoid the centre of Hemsworth go past one of our Junior schools which I totally agree is very poor planning. I believe these decisions have been made not in the best interest of the Hemsworth residents but for the benefit of local businessmen and land owners.
