Attack was very confusing
COUN Benson's attack on ward 14 Labour councillor Laurie Harrison is very confusing.
He states: "When has it been acceptable for a councillor from another council to influence the selection of other council's members?"
He, like Coun Harrison, is an elected ward 14 councillor.
But, unlike Coun Benson, Coun Harrison is elected by a majority of local Labour members as part of the ward 14 Labour group, of which Coun Benson was a member.
South Elmsall Council has always followed electoral procedure by advertising every casual vacancy.
Historically if nobody calls for an election, co-option takes place.
There has never been an agreement to replace like with like.
Why should there be when the Independents oppose us for what seems to be nothing but a clash of personalities at ward level (in private they call themselves Labour)?
On this occasion the Independents must have decided to test the water prior to the upcoming general and ward elections, so 10 local people called for an election to fill the vacancy.
Ward 14 has 23 out of 26 Labour councillors and Coun Harrison represents us locally and at Wakefield Council level and is democratically elected by the majority of members and the electorate.
I don't see any difference between how Coun Mills led Coun Benson's campaign into Moorthorpe and South Kirkby and what Coun Harrison did in assisting our Labour candidate (we are political parties opposing each other).
This is nothing but a personal attack and the continual use of the term 'New Labour' is a slur. How you should judge Labour is by their achievements in schools, hospitals, families and regeneration, unlike the Tory years.
