Memories from South Kirkby

THE son of a colliery worker from the Express area got in touch with some pictures from the past after taking a look at our online nostalgia section.

Graham and Heather Wall, of Wimbourne, Dorset, e-mailed images from the early 1900s featuring members of Mr Wall's family.

The main picture (above) shows Mr Wall's late father Thomas Wall (end left) with his regiment. He was born in South Kirkby and worked at both Frickley and South Kirkby collieries. He married Doris Walker, of Moorthorpe, and they had nine daughters and four sons.

Graham said: "My father, who is in the picture, served in The 17th/21st Lancers from around 1926 to 1933 and his eldest son Brian, myself and nephew Stephen also served in the same regiment."

Mr Wall also sent us this picture of his maternal grandparents, Walter and Mary Jane Walker, which was taken on their wedding day sometime between 1900 and 1910. The couple lived in Moorthorpe and Mr Walker worked on the railways.

Graham said he believed one of their children, his auntie Edna Broxholme (nee Walker), still lived in the South Elmsall area.
